American Academy of Nursing Releases Workplace Violence Policy Dialogue Meeting Proceedings

Proceedings Feature Policy Recommendations and Discussion Summaries

Washington, DC (March 29, 2024) – The American Academy of Nursing (Academy) has released the meeting proceedings from the July 2023 Policy Dialogue, “Protecting our Caregivers: Comprehensive Strategies for Eliminating Workplace Violence,” hosted by the Academy’s Psychiatric, Mental Health, and Substance Use Expert Panel in collaboration with the Expert Panels on Trauma & Violence and Military & Veterans Health. The Academy’s Policy Dialogues convene thought leaders to discuss a pressing topic and to propose policy recommendations that champion the organization’s policy priorities to advance health equity.


Comprised of Fellows recognized for their contributions to health and organized by area of expertise, Expert Panels are one of the major forces within the Academy for developing new knowledge to transform health policy. Through consensus building and collaboration, Academy Expert Panels advance evidence-based solutions to the most complex health care challenges. In hosting Policy Dialogues, Expert Panels lead engaging discussions to further enhance awareness and consider policy proposals that work to achieve the Academy's vision of healthy lives for all people.

The Academy is pleased to release the summary for this Policy Dialogue, centered on policy issues associated with workplace violence for nurses and other health care providers. This event explored proposed legislation, shared best practices, and outlined future steps to improve the safety and well-being of nurses, health care professionals, and environments. Participants were able to hear from experts on how the profession can advance policies to protect providers. Speakers for the dialogue included:

  • Emily Champlin, JD, Senior Policy Advisor, American Nurses Association
  • Representative Larry Bucshon, MD, U.S. House of Representatives, Indiana’s 8th Congressional District
  • Scott Hutton, PhD, RN, MBA, FAAN, FACHE, Director of Operations, Workplace Violence Prevention Program, Veterans Health Administration Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention
