Taming the Wild West: Harnessing the Future of Artificial Intelligence

Linda D. Scott, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FADLN, FNAP, FAAN, President, American Academy of Nursing

Science fiction author William Gibson wrote, “the future is already here – it's just not evenly distributed.” While many can dispute the intent and validity of this quote, when it comes to Artificial Intelligence (AI), it certainly does seem to ring true. Large language models and their ability to enhance and support industries from health care to non-profits, suggests that this technology is here to stay and those using it are a step above the competition. To that end, as generative AI is further amplified, it feels like we have already created a future that is not evenly distributed. However, the question becomes how it can be an asset and what must be done to protect privacy and intellectual property while upholding professional ethical standards and a code of accepted conduct.
