Can Polarity Be Managed: Embracing “Both/And” ThinkingLinda D. Scott, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FADLN, FNAP, FAAN, President, American Academy of Nursing Polarities exist in every dimension of our lives. For every belief we hold, there is an opposing school of thought. For every course we advocate for, there is another path urged by our counterparts. This applies to politics, the workplace, and our personal lives. The pole we gravitate towards may be shaped by our different experiences and values, and more importantly, informs our perception of the world and our role in it. In that way, polarity is an extremely human, social concept. And yet one in which many find uncomfortable, believing polarity is a problem (Clark, 2024). While opposing polarities may be perceived as a problem to be solved, or a division to bridge, they are as inevitable as they are integral to interpersonal dynamics. The aim is to recognize they exist and find balance within them.
