Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science Announces Election Results

Elected and Appointed Members of National Advisory Council Assume New Roles

Washington, DC (October 3, 2023) – The Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science (CANS), a signature initiative of the American Academy of Nursing (Academy), announces its election results for the CANS National Advisory Council (NAC) Chair-Elect and Councilor of Science positions, as well as appointments for other CANS NAC leadership positions.

Victoria Vaughan Dickson, PhD, RN, FAHA, FHFSA, FAAN, Dean, University of Connecticut School of Nursing, has assumed the Chair position of the CANS NAC, following her term as Chair-Elect. Dr. Dickson is an internationally recognized nurse scientist skilled in qualitative research techniques, mixed methods research, and building research capacity across disciplines. Her extensive clinical and research experience investigating the biobehavioral influences on self-care in patients with cardiovascular disease risk highlights her dedication to fostering better health through nursing science.

Hudson Santos, PhD, RN, FABMR, FAAN, Professor and Vice Dean for Research Affairs, University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies has been elected as Chair-Elect of the CANS NAC. With a successful research program funded by the National Institutes of Health and over 100 peer reviewed publications, Dr. Santos is an expert on the interplay between biological and social determinants of health in maternal-child health outcomes among at-risk communities. He previously served as the CANS Councilor of Programming, during which he led the planning for the successful 2022 CANS State of the Science Congress on Nursing Research and 2023 CANS Advanced Methods Conference.

Ann Marie McCarthy, PhD, RN, FNASN, FAAN, Professor, University of Iowa has been elected to serve a second term as Councilor of Science. Dr. McCarthy’s clinical experience in pediatrics, pediatric neurology, and community health centers, combined with her longstanding research on cognitive-behavioral interventions for pain management in children and children with chronic conditions, demonstrates her dedication to advancing the science of the nursing profession. In addition to her roles within CANS, Dr. McCarthy has served on the research committees for the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and the National Association of School Nurses.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Santos assume the Vice Chair position and for Dr. McCarthy to continue her service as the re-elected Councilor of Science,” said CANS NAC Chair Victoria Vaughan Dickson, PhD, RN, FAHA, FHFSA, FAAN. “Their leadership will continue to elevate nursing science and inspire evidence-based foundations for health policy recommendations. Together, we will continue to amplify our profession’s science.”

 Additionally, the Academy Board of Directors approved the NAC’s appointment of:

  • Felesia Bowen, PhD, DNP, ARNP, FAAN, Professor and Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing, has been appointed by the NAC to serve a one-year term as the Councilor of Programming.

  • Nancy Dias, PhD, RN, Associate Professor, East Carolina University College of Nursing has been appointed by the NAC to serve a one-year term as Councilor of Membership.

  • Ansley Stanfill, PhD, RN, FAAN, Associate Dean of Research and Associate Professor, University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Nursing to serve as Councilor at Large for a two-year term.

The newly elected and appointed NAC members assumed their positions following the 2023 Advanced Methods Conference which was held on September 13, 2023.
