Academy Comment Letter to HHS on HIPAA Security Rule

The American Academy of Nursing sent a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) regarding the proposed rule to modify the HIPAA Security Rule to strengthen the cybersecurity of electronic protected health information (ePHI). The letter highlighted the need to support cybersecurity measures in conjunction with sustainable patient care flows, address care that occurs outside of traditional settings, and clarify the application of the rule to current and emergent AI technologies. 

The Academy’s Artificial Intelligence Taskforce along with the Informatics & Technology and Bioethics Expert Panels contributed to the development of the response.
