Clinical Nurse Scientists bring invaluable expertise to a variety of health care settings. They conduct research, work directly with patients, and develop evidence-based interventions. In this webinar, hosted by the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science Clinical Nurse Scientist Special Interest Group, participants will hear from a panel of Clinical Nurse Scientists stemming from different employers who will discuss how to address ROI, including: how to quantify the impact of the Clinical Nurse Scientist role; avenues to connect with the finance department on tracking cost savings tied to nursing research; and how Clinical Nurse Scientists can discuss their contributions to help gain support for their work and their role on the health care team. 

Registration is open to CANS members at no additional cost, and non-members at $65. This webinar will be 60 minutes and 1 nursing continuing professional development (NCPD) contact hour will be available for purchase at $25 in the registration portal.

Lina Najib Kawar is the Regional Director for Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Program for Southern California and Hawaii Markets and Co-Chair for the National Nursing Research/EBP Council Kaiser Permanente. Dr. Kawar serves as the research/EBP lead and senior nurse scientist for the organization, where she is impacting over 38,000 SCAL/HI and 73,618 national nurses. Dr. Kawar’s seminal contributions of leading multisite, multisystem, interregional studies related to patient outcomes have improved 4.8 million members/patients. She is also leading studies targeting the quadruple aim towards a healthy work environment. Her contribution to addressing equity, diversity, and inclusivity threads through accessibility to all people, advancing evidence-informed health and wellness, and increasing investments in research and Scientific careers. Her scalable impact stems from her multidimensional work, including promoting nursing excellence, the nurse scientist role, and her bilingual/bicultural background. Internationally, Dr. Kawar’s groundbreaking research and dissertation work among Arab immigrant women to alleviate disparities has paved the way for other researchers to further research among this unique population. Her research findings influenced Arab/Jordanian women's breast cancer screening recommendations and practices also advocated for adding the Middle Eastern category to the US census in 2024. Dr. Kawar holds a PhD from the University of Rochester, an MSN from George Mason University, and BSN/Midwifery from the University of Jordan.

Helene Moriarty, PhD, RN, FAAN, is Professor, Diane & Robert Moritz, Jr. Endowed Chair in Nursing Research at the Villanova University M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing and Nurse Scientist at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz Veterans Affairs (CMCVA) Medical Center. She is also a member of the NewCourtland Center for Transitions and Health at Penn Nursing and a Core Investigator at the CMCVA Center for Healthcare Evaluation, Research, and Promotion. Dr. Moriarty's research has led to novel insights and healthcare approaches for Veterans with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and their families. Her current NIH-funded study (R01NR018655) evaluates the impact of an innovative in-home rehabilitation intervention for Veterans and civilians with chronic traumatic brain injury and their family members. Dr. Moriarty has held many leadership roles within the VA health system, and from 2022 to April 2025 served as Chair or Co-Chair of the VA Nursing Research Field Advisory Committee charged with developing and implementing the strategic plan for nursing research for the entire VA health system.

 

Olga Yakusheva, PhD, MSPE, FAAN

Olga Yakusheva, PhD, MSE, FAAN is an internationally leading expert and thought leader on the economic value of nursing to healthcare systems. She is an economist and Professor at Johns Hopkins Nursing and an Economics Editor for the International Journal of Nursing Studies. Dr. Yakusheva’s work has been published in top economics and medical journals including Review of Economics and Statistics and JAMA. Dr. Yakusheva’s research team has led studies quantifying the value-added contribution of nurses to patient outcomes and to organizational financial outcomes, to improve nurse staffing, reduce burnout, and promote the economic value of nurses. Dr. Yakusheva is the lead author of the Nursing Human Value Capital Model and the Value-Informed Nursing Practice and Leadership Model.
