Policy Programs and Initiatives
As a policy organization, the Academy collaborates with its Expert Panels to generate sound policy solutions to the most complex issues facing health equity and care delivery. The Academy’s policy work is amplified by submitting letters and comments to the federal government, identifying and recommending nursing experts for federal commissions, working in collaboration with DC-based coalitions, publishing position statements, hosting Policy Dialogues that bring together thought leaders, among other efforts. Academy Fellows actively participate in the organization by joining Expert Panels to help support the organization’s policy recommendations, obtain appointments to the organization’s committees and national advisory councils, serve in elected leadership positions, engage in philanthropic efforts, attend Academy events such as the Health Policy Conference, State of the Science Congress on Nursing Research, policy dialogues, and webinars.

Fellows have the opportunity to apply to programs with our partner, the National Academy of Medicine, including the NAM Distinguished Nurse Scholar-in-Residence program, as well as the NAM AAN Fellowship program. Throughout its history, the Academy has launched and managed several policy programs and initiatives, including Have You Ever Served in the Military? See below for more details.

AAN Fellow at NAM

The American Academy of Nursing’s (AAN) National Academy of Medicine (NAM) Fellowship program provides talented scholars in nursing with the opportunity to experience and participate in evidence-based public health studies that improve the care and access to care of patients in domestic and global health care systems. NAM is one of three Congressionally chartered academies that make up the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, “that works to provide objective advice on matters of science, technology, and health.”

2024 - 2026 AAN Fellow at NAM - Roxana C. Chicas, PhD, RN, FAAN

2022 - 2024 AAN Fellow at NAM - Paule V. Joseph, PhD, MS, FNP-BC, CTN-B, FAAN

Learn more about the AAN Fellows at NAM.

This two-year Fellowship program, exclusively designed for AAN Fellows to maintain their current position while contributing to the work of the NAM and the National Academies, will further facilitate the dissemination of nursing knowledge and expertise in key discussions that will impact health policy at the national level.

The AAN NAM Fellow will be immersed in a unique learning environment offered at NAM, paired with an elected NAM member for mentorship, and will be awarded a flexible research grant of $25,000 for the two-year period, which will be administered through their home institution to help advance the individual’s professional development. This grant is not intended for use as a salary offset for the fellow, and no indirect costs are allowed. AAN NAM Fellows will be actively involved in producing reports and relevant study products while engaging with legislators, government officials, industry leaders, executives, scientists, and other health profession experts.

During the two-year Fellowship, the Fellow is expected to continue to work at their primary academic and research posts, while being assigned to a particular board at NAM. The board include:

  • Children, Youth, and Families
  • Food and Nutrition
  • Global Health
  • Health Care Services
  • Health Sciences Policy
  • Population Health and Public Health Practice

The fellowship requires a 10- to 20-percent commitment of time for two years, and includes attendance at a one-week orientation session, the NAM Annual Meeting and the meetings of the fellow’s designated board. Domestic travel expenses are covered for participation in approved fellowship activities. Additionally, the Fellow will participate actively in the work of an appropriate study committee or roundtable, including contributing to its reports or other products. Studies that would enable the potential for the fellow to contribute to the value of integrating medicine and public health will be identified.

This experience will introduce the AAN Fellow to a variety of experts and perspectives, including legislators, government officials, industry leaders, executives of voluntary health organizations, scientists, and other health professionals. In addition, each fellow will be assigned to an NAM member who will serve as a senior mentor during the two years of the fellowship.

AAN’s mission to improve health and achieve health equity by impacting policy through nursing, leadership, innovation, and science is a cornerstone of this Fellowship. It builds and adds to the impact of NAM Distinguished Nurse Scholar-in-Residence program supported by AAN, the American Nurses Association, and the American Nurses Foundation, established in 1992. Having two distinct programs available to Academy Fellows to engage at the NAM further amplifies nursing expertise at this esteemed policy making body.

Have You Ever Served in the Military?

Managed and designed by the American Academy of Nursing, Have You Ever Served in the Military? is an initiative to improve the health of Veterans. Have You Ever Served in the Military? encourages healthcare providers to ask about and document their patients’ military background. Nurses and other healthcare providers are given information to assist in identifying the most common health concerns linked to military service, as well as questions the provider should ask the Veteran or his or her family member in order to obtain a more complete military medical history.
